PLAIN OF JARS

In the 60s, the “Plain of Jars” used to be cited everyday on the radio. A strip of land about 40 km wide that has marked the history of entire countries. A strip of land that cost the lives of more than one million men during the first and second Indochina War. An archaeological site which enhances even more the surrounding atmosphere between desolation, absent vegetation and human history. A strategic place from which you could have total control of movements to North Vietnam and located in the Northeastern Laos, precisely in the province of Xieng Khouang. A ghostly place, looking like the Moon, where the house boundaries are marked by millions of unexploded bombs, instead of dividers made from fencing wire mesh. Visitors can still see, after forty years, the distortion of the lives and history of people living over there. Faces, places and modes of behavior marked by the distant past from the following generations, but the essence of what happened nack in the past still affects people’s lives and culture. An aware observer cannot miss this atmosphere, thus thinking about the mentioned history. To do that, we need to remember what the “Plain of Jars” was.
