This is a collection of positive glass plates signed by Adolphe Klier, the Austrian photographer who lived in Rangoon in the late 19th century showing several scenes of Burmese life. Noblemen in rich and regal costumes, sorrounded by wives and concubines with their finest jewelry, and common as well as astonishing people, such as women smoking cigars. There are also images of landscapes, rivers, elephants at work moving teak logs, pagodas, temples, monks' funerals. What is most striking is the sharp details of the images, and besides to see how the artist was able to blend such a balance of technical clarity and artistic subtlety. In that era, only a few professional photographers had mastered the potential of the lens and the treatment of the negatives and prints at such a high level. Today the technology used in 'fine art' photographic reproduction allows artists to reach such levels in much less time, but somehow lacking that fascinating, unrepeatable mix of tone, light and shadow, and gradations of the grey scale present in the originals. That special blend of factors such as the nature of the negative, light, prints, and products used, together with the sensibility of the photographer, are all elements mastered by Klier and revealed through these works. The Face of Asia archive consists of 90 plates, part mostly ascribed to Klier, others of uncertain attribution but of a similar quality and environment, which let them generally to be connected to the artist. The archive is currently looking for a main sponsor from the Public or Private sectors, in order to make an exhibition, showing the original plates and printing them on cotton paper with carbon ink. This exhibit will be a world premiere, since so far Klier and his world have never been showed solely. Today, at a distance of almost a century and a half, these images are an important collection for the history of photo documentation in Colonial Asia. Technical details: Exhibit of 50 to 80 images with a dimension of 90x80 cm on cotton paper with carbon ink, complete with caption describing each subject.
